Keyboard Shortcuts

A reference for every keyboard shortcut in Scoutworks — navigation, actions, forms, tables, and email — with the full list always one key press away.

If you run a Scout group from a laptop once the kids are in bed, a few keyboard shortcuts will shave minutes off every session. Scoutworks has shortcuts for jumping between pages, opening dialogs, moving through tables, and saving forms — and the full list is always one key press away.

Opening the shortcut list

Press ? from anywhere in Scoutworks to open the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog. It shows every shortcut that is active on the page you are on right now, grouped by category. Press Esc to close it.

Shortcuts that work everywhere

These work on every page in Scoutworks.

ShortcutWhat it does
Cmd + K / Ctrl + KOpen global search
?Show this shortcut list

Cmd + K does much more than open a search box — it has its own dedicated dialog with recent items, grouped results, and quick jumps to settings. The full guide is in Global Search and the Command Palette.

Jumping between pages

Press g, then a letter, to jump to a main section. This works like Gmail — tap g and you have one second to press the next key.

ShortcutWhere you go
g then dDashboard
g then mMembers
g then eEvents
g then bBadges
g then fFinance
g then iEmail
g then kKnowledge Base
g then qEquipment
g then wWaiting List
g then rRisk Management
g then nInsights
g then sSettings

You will only see the shortcuts for pages your role can reach. If you do not have access to Finance, for example, g f will not do anything.

Creating new items

On most list pages, press N to open the "add new" dialog straight away — no need to find the button.

PageWhat N opens
MembersAdd Member dialog
EventsCreate Event dialog
EquipmentAdd Equipment dialog
ExpensesSubmit Expense Claim dialog
Waiting ListAdd to Waiting List dialog
EmailNew email composer

N is always shown in the Actions group in the shortcut dialog, so if you are not sure what it will do on the page you are on, press ? first.

Moving through tables

Once you land on a list page, you can drive the table from the keyboard — handy when you are scanning down a long members list or triaging the waiting list.

ShortcutWhat it does
j or ↓Move to the next row
k or ↑Move to the previous row
EnterOpen the highlighted row
EscClear the row highlight

The highlight only starts once you press j or ↓, so the shortcut will not get in the way if you are reading.

Saving forms and dialogs

Every form dialog in Scoutworks — from adding a member to logging an expense — supports the same save shortcut.

ShortcutWhat it does
Cmd + Enter / Ctrl + EnterSave or submit the form
EscClose the dialog without saving

This works while your cursor is still inside a text field, so you can finish typing and save without reaching for the mouse. Look for the small ⌘ ⏎ hint next to the Save button as a reminder.

Email shortcuts

The Email page has an extra set of shortcuts for moving through your inbox quickly, similar to Gmail.

ShortcutWhat it does
cCompose a new email
eArchive the open email
#Move the open email to trash
j / kMove to the next / previous email
/Jump into the search box
g then sGo to Sent
g then dGo to Drafts
g then hGo to Scheduled
g then tGo to Templates
g then aGo to Group Archive
EscClose the open email

When shortcuts pause

Scoutworks pauses letter shortcuts in a few places so they do not get in your way:

  • While you are typing in a text field — letters go into the field, not into a shortcut. Cmd + Enter and Cmd + K still work.
  • While a dialog is open — page-level shortcuts like N and j/k pause so dialog shortcuts take priority.
  • On mobile — shortcut hints are hidden because phones do not have keyboards. Everything is still reachable by tap.
